“When I think I’m most spiritual i usually hear least from God. And when I’m doing something like brushing my teeth I get a real revelation. I think one of the things to hear from God, is you have to be relaxed. I don’t think you can be all tense and religious and hear from God. “
(Quote begins at 12:00)
This is a quote from someone who not only had an extensive understanding of scripture, but a life solely dedicated to sharing and applying those truths. The quote is simple, yet also profound. Let me explain:
There’s a verse in the book of Job that says:
For God may speak in one way, or in another,
Yet man does not perceive it.
In a dream, in a vision of the night,
When deep sleep falls upon men,
While slumbering on their beds,
Then He opens the ears of men,
And seals their instruction.
Its super interesting to recognize that God speaks, but man does not perceive it. Therefore, when we sleep God utilizes the opportunity to seal instruction. While, this verse is specifically talking about dreams, it’s important to note, that’s the time when we are most at ease. Perhaps, like Derek Prince said, it are those mundane moments we are most inclined to perceive that “still small voice.”
According to Merriam Webster the definition of perceive is: to become aware of through the senses.
Some people will criticize others when they say “I sense this is what God is saying,” or “I feel the LORD is telling me…” Those phrases, nonspiritual folk will jump all over and call you a fanatic, it’s sad. But, the book of Hebrews indicates the opposite. In order for us to grow to maturity we must gain a workable understanding of the senses in relation to the application of the living Word.
But solid food belongs to those who are of full age, that is, those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil.
Suffice it to say fasting will help you develop that ability, nevertheless God speaks and if you believe that, you’re one step closer to hearing him.
My wife, and two other friends described places and situations were they heard God so clearly. The shower, the mountains, in a spa, and for me, many times its at the most random of moments such as when I’m walking through a parking lot to my car.
